The Wolf Pack III: A Final Collection Of U-Boat Modeling Articles: The second volume of The Wolf Pack continues in the same vein and includes eight more articles. Once again the general theme is to explore the modifications, insignia and paint colors of Kriegsmarine U-boats so that modelers can make accurate renditions of specific U-boats.

UBoot models found on net.

Generally, U-boats were painted in very dark grey ( not hull red) below the waterline, and medium/ light grey above the waterline. The very dark grey extended to the tops of the ballast tanks.

Paint schemes Posted by: P_Woodworth () Date: November 18, 2010 12:04AM Hi all, I was just wondering if the U-Boats had any particular paint schemes. I know US subs experimented with stripes, black, and slate gray. Was there any such experimenting with the U-boats, or where they all gray, like seen on the top of the website. Thanks, Paul

Yes I did win second place with my 1/32nd scale type 7C u-boat,and still have the silver bowl to prove it . Since I build R/C boats I look for colors that are easy to apply, touch up , purchase and hold up to the wear and tear of constant use. therefore I use TESTORS FLAT RED, FLAT BLACK AND FLAT LIGHT GRAY.

There is one photo in particular, that provides a reasonably good indication of the three shades of grey for the upper hull, lower hull, and the deck. It is from this photo I decided to paint my sub in the three Tamiya colours. I am confident that the Tamiya XF-19 is a good match for the upper hull and conning tower.

U-boat commander SCHNEE painted his conning tower of his type XXI white because he felt that a ligther color was harder to see from the air. So , as you can see there was alot of variations that depended on time frame of the war etc.

Date: March 13, 2004 02:54PM Hi. I've heard that the instructions in the ULAD 1/72 U-Boat decals have paint numbers for Humbrol and Revell. Can anyone post those numbers. I know WEP has a range with "the correct" colors, but I think I won't use for two reasons: 1 - I want acrylic paint. 2 - I want to start painting this weekend.

This is the place to discuss general issues related to the U-boat war or the war at sea in WWII. Re: Paint Schemes. I am not 100% sure about the U-boats colour scheme, but I have read about German warship painting. The sources differs a lot in opinions about this, but my own personal view is that the colour schemes were not coordinated that.

Type IX UBoats (1936)

Date: July 14, 2005 12:16PM I read recently a report of some U-Boats in Norwegian bases with varying colour schemes, some were described as blue or grey, one as 'bright' blue and one as black and white. It was this latter that interested me. Arctic patrol obviously, but where all boats operating up there painted black & white?
